Day 1: Essenheim
July 14, 2019
Essenheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
Welcome to our first day on the travel blog!
We flew Into Frankfurt, Germany at 16:45 local time (4:45pm). After a long fairly uncomfortable flight we were able to quickly get our bags from checking and slowly and confusedly make our way to our ADOrABle air bnb.
Having ordered our Eurail passes ahead of time we needed to activate them. There are a lot of signs and it’s pretty clear where to go but we were a little overwhelmed at first, especially since most signs were German only. We met another traveler who was confused and asking us for help; which is never a good sign. We politely smiled and told her we were just as lost. I found the travel center shortly after though and a lovely German girl helped us and even let me keep her pen since I didn’t think I needed to pack one.
The lovely lady sent us on our muddled way and thankfully had given us a paper with a highlighted route to take. The second we stepped onto the train platform our train came. Trying to make sure it was the right one we almost missed it as I had to catch the doors from closing on us as we jumped in. We found ourselves squished onto a train with a couple who didn’t look to happy to have their space taken up by our big bags. We spent the next 25 minutes rubbernecking at the city around us. Our stop came and we slid off into the streets of downtown Mainz. We found the bus stops and again barely made our bus.
We haven’t had time to exchange money yet and we didn’t know if our Eurail passes worked for the busses or if our bus driver was just nice enough to drop us off 30 minutes later at our stop. When I flashed the pass and pointed to where we needed to go he just shrugged and said “ya fine”. 🙌
We left the city and headed into wine country and landed in a beautiful small town of Essenheim. Our host met us in the air bnb and I made sure to buy a bottle of their wine immediately. Very cute spot we found and we are happily settled. Ryan will tell you later about our food fail for dinner in the next post.
Tchüss! 👋
