Essenheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Well, not really our first dinner, but so far we have had a few interesting food anecdotes.

My first experience with an international airline was pretty good. We took an overnight flight from Arizona to Frankfurt with Condor. Even though we ate a meal before boarding our over seas flight we were both hungry enough to enjoy our in-flight meal. As the meals were handed out, I noticed straight away that the food was hot. This stood out in particular because the large jet was almost entirely full.

The dinner meal consisted of a pasta as the main entree, a bread roll with cheese and/or butter, a small dish of coleslaw, and a small side of chocolate pudding. Each item was pretty fresh as well as tasted better than I expected. The cheese brand, Tilamook, was a nice surprise since that brand happens to be from Oregon (our home state).

Also while ordering the beverage for dinner Jamie attempted to order Orangensaft, german for orange juice, but the hostess didn’t hear her the first time. Jamie bailed on that attempt and just got water instead. We later confirmed with out AirBnb host that she did say it correctly, it must have been the noise from the plane.

After an uncomfortable night’s sleep breakfast was served. This meal was simpler. It consisted of a bread roll with butter & jam, cheese & turkey, and cantaloupe & pineapple. What surprised me this time was how fresh the fruit tasted. The cheese seemed a little older that the rest, but it was still better that I expected for airplane food.

All in all the plane’s meals were good. You can’t complain too much either when they’re free… well you have to buy the expensive plane ticket! 🙃

Our First Authentic German Meal

Once we arrived at our first Airbnb started the hunt for food. The local time was 19:00 so we search for dinner, even though for us it was technically lunch time. After meeting the kind Airbnb hostess she recommended we try the place across the street. We gave it a try, it was a very authentic German restaurant. After seating ourselves I remembered based on some research that most places accept cash only. Sure enough, upon indicating to our waitress that we had card she shook her head and “Nein”.

So that wasn’t an option. Earlier, before we left our flat, I saw down the road in the next town over there was a Mc Donald’s. That wasn’t our first choice for obvious reasons, but at least we had a backup in case the authentic restaurant didn’t work out.

So, you guessed it. We ate at Mc Donald’s for our first night in Germany. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️
